Pressies and Things

Yesterday was my birthday,
57 years were has the time gone,
Martin did not manage to get home yesterday, work again, but he will be home tonight.
He did leave a pressie for me to open
A metal detector, wonderful it was what I asked for, now I can walk our land with it and take it to the beach when we go.
Talking of land at long last we are completing on the new land, 15 acres  adjoining ours next week, it should have been yesterday but the sellers solicitor is away.
It has been a long drawn out 18 months since we agreed a price.
There will be no time for birthday celebrations this week end, tomorrow we are collecting the pigs, Welsh x Pietrain 10 weeks old. All for the freezer.
I have started curing another batch of Bacon
It wont be ready for a couple of weeks
I got myself a new book
Lots of lovely things in there to try and was written by a man who lived local to were we moved from
On the back of the book I used my Tesco voucher £10.50 to buy half a side of salmon to smoke and cure following some of his methods, that is on today's list
I also needed some Prague powder, number 1 is for meat that is going to be cooked after curing, number 2 is for meat that is cured and air dried.
Another tree arrived, this time an Almond, there was also a walnut but I planted that, just waiting on 5 sweet chestnuts now.
I bought myself a birthday pressie a seed ruler
Its 40 inches long, marked in inches and centimetres all along is marked with sowing distances for various vegetables, and there is holes at every inch to sow your seeds, I use to have a bit of wood that I marked out but at some point it went astray.
This week end I also have to make some bread, oil the two sheep skins, then the other two that were salted last week need fleshing and getting into the tanning solution.
So I better get a move on.

Diary
Tuesday 30th November 1982
Brought sheep into top field by drive, John treated Teddy's eyes, then went up and brought Welsh Mountain ewes down, fixed temporary fence across drive and sheep fencing wire under the gate. Very heavy frost in morning not all cleared by evening.
Gave Magic six sulpha tabs and two drenches of egg, glucose and water.
Went to Yamaha concert in evening, I won raffle prize of Handysound 200 organ in free raffle, very delighted.

  9. Belated many happy returns hope you get chance to celebrate when Martin is back. I have salmon to do in the next few weeks and bacon. Can I ask where you sourced your Prague powders from. Glad to hear you are completing on the land at long last so chuffed for you. Glad you are getting your Nuttery too - my dream property has one! I also like your seed ruler will have to look out for one as that is where I have problems in spacing stuff out. I have that meat curing book and it has some lovely recipes in. Hope you have fun with the metal detector. Am off to do some Tarragon vinegar, dry some herbs. source a recipe for biltong/jerky OH has developed a liking for it and our Jack Russell is partial too. Have ordered our Turkey this morning due for collection on Christmas Eve. Went to the Butchers again and this time have come back with some speciality coffees that have different flavours. I love pigs; my grandparents always kept them and there was always a welcoming party for the new arrivals each year. They also kept Geese too. One day. Enjoy sweetheart - I know you will. Take care. 10. It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday, despite Martin not being there to celebrate it with you. What a lovely gift - I can guarantee that you will find LOTS of fencing staples, bits of wire and probably bits from old farm machinery as that is what we have found with ours (which has gathered dust for far too long).

That looks a brilliant book too and you will soon be getting gold stars in smoking and curing.

I have never seen a seed ruler before, but WHAT a good idea that is.

  11. Happy Birthday!! All the best people are born in November :) The land around us that was sold at the same time as we bought the house took absolutely ages to go through, months after our completion. You would think it would be less complicated. Looking forward to seeing your plans for it.
