In the shed today there was a plague of flies, the above photo shows what was left after I had zapped them with fly killer, the windows were covered with them, my initial thought was something had crawled in there and died, I emptied the shed shifted the units checked every bag, pot and bucket, nothing to be found, I have no idea what was the reason behind the fly swarm.
Picked another load of runner beans, they are coming to an end there is no more flowers, there is a last picking still on there left them to grow a bit more.
I managed to get a photo of the stags displaying, all puffed up and doing a dance, they make a kind of huffing boom noise when they are doing it.
Soup on the menu today, I had some dried pulses so into the pot with loads of veg
I used some of the small squashes, carrot swede, potatoes, courgette and onion all cooked up with some herbs and stock,
All blitzed up to make a lovely thick soup, there is plenty for Martin to take back with him and some to go in the freezer.
Tomorrow I am planning a day of cooking, I have defrosted a chicken and joint of pork. I need to get some bread done as well.
Sol is a lot better, we both had a good nights sleep, he had his post op check today all is OK. His stitches come out in 10 days.
We are still having lovely weather, Sol and me had a lovely dusk walk down in the forest, we were a bit late for our walk I was caught up on the phone. The sunsets and sunrises have been beautiful, we still haven't had a frost but no doubt we will get one soon.
I hope you are all enjoying this Indian Summer :-)
Were the flies all clustering together? I think it's a bad year for cluster flies we had some indoors on the bedroom window. I hoover them up rather than spraying. Our neighbour had a really bad infestation in her loft a few years ago she now puts a smoke bomb thing in there each autumn
ReplyDeleteThey're cluster flies my dear - part of the joys of the countryside! I have an attic full too - had to go up there today and opened the windows to get them out and there were 100s. Horrid. They'll be getting in around the windows for weeks and weeks now.
ReplyDeleteYour soup looks delicious! I am glad that Sol is doing well, I hope that he will be all mended and totally back to normal soon. xx
ReplyDeleteIt's felt like winter here on the Essex coast today and my heating has been on low all afternoon. I was surprised that the washing dried as it feels so dank. Just the right weather for a lovely pot of soup like yours Dawn. I'm glad Sol has recovered we and you both had a hood nights sleep.
ReplyDeleteGlad Sol is good, hope the boys too have recovered after their op. We have had lots of flies too , mainly upstairs though...they just seem to be waiting to be despatched which I eagerly do! We have had the most beautiful pink skies morning and night...as you said just so lovely to enjoy the views .
ReplyDeleteI hate flies and we get them so bad each Summer from the sheep. Actually I think the horses cause more flies than the sheep but whatever I hate them.
ReplyDeleteNice looking beans!!!!
We are getting a lot of flies again here, although it is getting colder and they should really be done for the year. And oh what a lovely pot of soup.....I must get a pot on the go for us to dib into when we are hungry and I am too busy to cook. Glad that Sol and you have had a good night's sleep....I reckon that with a good night's sleep one can tackle anything which life throws at you!
ReplyDeleteFlies - my nemesis. I can't wait for our fly screens to be repaired so that we can hang them again before the summer infestation occurs.
ReplyDeleteHi Dawn
ReplyDeleteSo pleased to hear that Sol is doing ok - I worked in social housing and every October one particular block of flats had a swarm of flies on the top landing - we were told that they were fruit (which could be cluster)flies returning to lay eggs and then die - as we weren't allowed to spray chemicals (H & S manager wouldn't let us spray fly spray!) They were left there and we just hoovered up the dead bodies each day. Personally I think the tenants went out and did what we weren't allowed to do and sprayed them till they'd gone! Xxx
Glad to hear that Sol is recovering well. Your soup looks delicious, just the thing for the weather we're having here, no Indian summer.
ReplyDeleteAll sounds very productive down there. Glad to hear of Sol's improvement - and your good night's sleep!
ReplyDeleteI hate flies, we get so many from all the cats next door. Your walks sound perfect, our autumnal weather is very mild this year,
ReplyDeleteI have a 'thing' about flies, if there is one in the house I can't rest until I get it out. Faced with all those flies, I think I would have a melt down!
ReplyDeleteI often find that if I leave a window open on a lovely sunny but autumnal day then a mass of flies will find their way in...looking for warmth through the glass maybe...do you sweet talk to the turkeys...I always used to when we kept them a few years ago and it was so funny to see them start displaying...try calling them pretty boys in a come hither voice and enjoy the show! Jackie.
