Daffodil gave birth to lovely 23lb daughter today
What a day!!!!
Martin fed the animals this morning and reported back that everything was OK and there was no sign of an impending birth, off he went to walk Pen A Fan with Sol, next door were out for the day too and i was to pop round and see to there little dog at lunch time, it was raining hard very unpleasant weather, on my way back from dog sitting I looked in on the Alpacas, Daffodil was laying down with the others as I walked up she got to her feet and this what I saw
I checked in my book and noticed a problem feet and legs are suppose to be present with the head, the legs were back which makes the shoulders too wide to pass
I phoned a local friend who has Alpaca's he was out for the day, I phoned the vet she couldn't come out as the other on call vet was out .
I phoned my neighbours who were out for the day to see what time they were coming home and they suggested I phoned a local farmer friend, I did and he was going to come up, the vet called me back and started to talk me through what to do, I could find the legs inside but couldn't push the head and neck in enough to bring them forward, farmer friend arrived and between us brought a leg forward and Daffodil managed to then deliver.
What a relief, farmer friend was shocked at the size and length of those legs,
after he left I hung about in the rain waiting for the afterbirth so I could dispose of it.
I popped a little jacket on her to keep the rain off now I am just waiting for her to feed
Congratulations, thank goodness you were about and kept a cool head.
ReplyDeleteWow she really is all legs isn't she?! Like a supermodel, bless her!
ReplyDeleteShe is lovely. Glad all went well in the end. Perhaps you should call her Twiggy after that famous model
ReplyDeleteCongrats :) Lucky you were around. Can't have been easy handling that on your own!?!
ReplyDeleteNow, with those face markings, what are you going to call her...?
Wow well done Mum and well done you. That must be so special to be present at the birth! She's gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteGood job for keeping your head! She is so beautiful and what a whopper.
ReplyDeleteWell done, and even better done for not panicking! Glad that the vet and your local farmer helped you through one way and another. She's a pretty little thing - any names yet?
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and well done for coping alone with a tricky birth to both you and Daffodil!!! I am sure that you are glad that the baby has arrived!! xx
ReplyDeleteOh how gorgeous.......Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteNow you can add midwife to the long list of skills you have. Well done Dawn for keeping your head while most of us would have lost it. Wow what big legs she has.
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic, clever mum, and you!!', best bit no 2 hours feeds for you at least. Nature is wonderful. Xxmaria
ReplyDeleteYou must be a very calm person - I would've been running around like a lunatic! The baby looks gorgeous. What's their official title - is it foals/calves or something like that?
ReplyDeletePhew! Lucky you were there and a happy outcome . The baby is ridiculously beautiful. Those eye lashes.
ReplyDeleteWow... you must have been exhausted last night! Congratulations to everyone!! Jx
ReplyDeleteOh wow Dawn, well done you, You can turn your hand to anything! What a little beaut.
ReplyDeleteWell done, and what a good job you were there to help her, and in true Blogger style photograph it all for posterity.
ReplyDeleteIt's heart stopping for a moment isn't it when you get faced with these things, but instinct (and books) kick in and you do just manage.
My first birthing was a litter of piglets which just kept coming and coming and as our sow was a first time Mum, as well as us being first time pig keepers it was a learning experience for me and her. They just kept coming 13 in all.
At least they were tiny and she did most of it herself, you had to wade in and help and the baby was a lot bigger!! Well done. xx
