While out walking Sol last night I spotted that the wild blueberries (Bilberry, Baeberry, Heath Berry) choose what you want to call them, were ripening.
Tonight's walk I took a couple of containers along and picked some wild strawberries they are just finishing now
and picked some wild blueberries
just as one fruit finishes another comes along, isn't mother nature great, it wont be long before the blackberries are ready for picking they are in flower and then it will be time to start harvesting nuts.
No doubt the foodies would call wild blueberries a super food, I am not into all this super food stuff I am an everything in moderation person.
We had a rainy morning so I got stuck into some bread making
one white loaf one seeded loaf these have now gone in the freezer
I then carded some more Alpaca fleece for spinning
I also got my first skein of Alpaca washed its now drying off then it will be ready to use,
The sun came out this afternoon, so I got some perennial plants in the ground in the flower garden, the borders are filling up nicely although the plants are small at the moment I am leaving plenty of space around them, they will grow and spread over the next year or so.
That's all from me today :-)
I love it when the berries are in season, so much to pick at! Gooseberry jam making tonight I think for me!
ReplyDeleteIt makes a walk a lot more enjoyable when you an identify edibles :-)
DeleteWhen you say wild are they growing wild on your land? I've never seen wild blueberries or strawberries. I think you are amazing how you keep yourself busy with lots of different things not to mention the different skills needed. Well done Dawn.
ReplyDeleteWild as in wild I find them when I am out walking the dog, along the verges and the wood land, wild strawberries look the same as the cultivated ones but a lot smaller :-)
DeleteDawn, I was wondering how to identify wild blueberries ? On my foraging trips I walk past a whole hedge of what looks like large sloes without thorns.
ReplyDeleteIt's laden with berries which are green at the moment.
Any advice please ? if they are wild blueberries, I've hit the jackpot !
wild blueberries are at ground level they dont grow much above a foot, same shaped leaf as the cultivated ones, they live acid soils you find them in mixed woodland and forest areas usually growing near heather, you have to really look for the berries they are not that obvious, I will take a photo this evening when I am out with the dog :-)
DeleteThanks Dawn, it sounds like they're no blueberries though because they are tall bushes over 6' - any ideas what they could be ?
DeleteCould be wild damsons Wean.
DeleteThe bilberries are at a higher level than us here so I have to go a bit further in search of them (but I could do with a wander).
ReplyDeleteThe wild strawberries are divine - when sun-ripened and still warm they are the food of the Gods.
Looking forward to seeing you and Pam tomorrow. I don't have an email addy for her so I hope you were able to give her the details of how to get here.
We took ex mother in law out picking wind berries as we call them in Somerset, loved going to North Hill, Minehead. Don't know where to look local for them.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos indeed, and blueberries and strawberries are quite a delight to eat.
