Fruit Trees and Kara Update

Now the weather has improved, I have made a start on planting out the fruit trees in what is going to be a mini orchard
There will be a mix of apple pear plums and cherry trees in this area with the bee hives
little seedlings are making an appearance in the green house
Swiss Chard and the free Dianthus seeds that came with my magazine the other week
Another couple of weeks and I will be taking down the insulation in the greenhouse to increase light levels and just put seedlings under fleece if needed at night.

Kara Update
She has been having her dressings changed every 2 days and her foot is healing well, she is still on pain relief and antibiotics, today at our visit to the vet they told me all the results were in and unfortunately its bad news, Kara has grade 2 metastasis cancer and they think it has invaded her lungs, as she has a bit of cough and seems to gag, also her activity levels have reduced a fair bit, we were offered a referral to a vet were they can give her chemo and radiotherapy, I declined the referral, her prognosis is not good and it would only extend her life by a few months they cant cure the condition, we took her on to enjoy her retirement,
Here she is today resting her foot in the spring sunshine, as long as she is comfortable that all that matters I don't want to end her days to-ing and fro-ing to vets for treatment.
She may be with us another year or just a few months we don't yet know.
They are going to be keeping a close eye on her.

  1. Sorry to hear your bad new, at least she's had a wonderful life with you, I had a dog until 2 years ago, he was only 3 and died very tragically, I still think about him x

My cats have to have regular monthly injections to keep them healthy, but they are still enjoying quality of life. I know I have some sad times ahead.

  3. Poor Kara - seems so unfair doesn't it? She's been a working dog and fully deserves a long and healthy retirement and now this - poor girl - I do think that you've made the right decision and you'll know when it's the right time to say, that's enough - thank goodness that she has you to look after her xxx

  4. So sorry to hear this. Her retirement hasn't worked out for her (nor for two friends of mine). As Trudie said, life seems so unfair. At least she has been so happy with you and will enjoy the time she has left.

  6. I think it takes a special person to take a retired working dog into their lives you simply don't know how long you will have them and very few people are willing to take on such a task as you know dawn if I would have retired Tara to anyone it would have been you and only you that I would have even considered as it was we wanted to keep her and pay her back for what she gave me. Keep your chin up dawn sending my love to you all

  7. I do believe you have made the right decision for Kara's future care and am sure that your vet will provide any painkillers to make her comfortable in the future. Sometimes things don't seem fair do they?

  10. Such sad news. We have been through similar situations with 3 dogs and have decided we just can't go through that heartbreak again. I know you'll give her all the love she deserves in the remaining time you have together. Sending lots of hugs your way.

  12. Such sad news regarding Kara, but she is in a perfect place to have a good life, you give her a wonderful quality of life. I would not have given her the treatment, we had a cat, Thomas who could have had treatment, but you can't explain to them, and they do suffer with treatments. The choice is hard, but loved to see you put Kara first.
