We don't like the rain
Yes its rained on and off all day today although it hasn't been as cold as yesterday, so for me it was a day inside although I didn't make the mistake of putting on the TV and sitting in front of the fire like yesterday.
The other day when I went to decant the curry sauce into containers for freezing the containers were annoying me trying to find the right lid to fit the container, so today I got them all sorted, every container was matched with its appropriate lid and they were all re-stacked and organised
Yesterday while sitting in front of the fire I was thinking about the chooks and wondering if they would come back into lay this side of christmas, then I had a light bulb moment, the free solar light I got free with the shed that was delivered the other day.

the solar panel has a built in light detector and when the sun goes down the light comes on
I expect it will only run for a few hours after sunset but hopefully that might be enough to get them
back into lay time will tell.
I had a go at making some Rosemary Crackers today, the recipe came out of the Home Farmer magazine
250g strong white flour
120ml water
60ml olive oil
ground sea salt
dried Rosemary
preheat oven to 200C
sift the flour into a bowl make a well in the middle and add the water and olive oil, mix together to form a firm dough, tip out and knead for 2 minutes until smooth and springy, divide into 3 and roll out each third to form a rectangle cut into slices,
place on a greased tray, prick all over with a fork and sprinkle with sea salt and rosemary,
bake for about 8-10 minutes, then transfer onto a cooling rack to crisp up.
I didn't like them on there own but they are really nice with some pate. Very easy to do and you can use other herbs as an alternative, I will be making them again, I do like savoury crackers.
Last Friday I was wearing a summer dress and so hot... Since then the weather has got progressively worse - rain and awfully strong winds. I will try the crackers but instead of using rosemary I think I will try crushed mixed peppercorns.

I think that a plain cracker is nicer when it is to go with something, and a more flavoured one to eat alone, so I imagine these are indeed great for your pate and so on. I am astounded at your container organisation!! That is amazing! xx
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a lightbulb on a timer for our hens over the winter - just a couple of hours extra "daylight" but it gave us extra eggs. I think your solar light is a great idea.

I've been thinking about making crackers so your recipe is timely! Great idea about the solar light for the coop. I've been thinking about putting one up in my milking room since we don't have electricity in any of the outbuildings. I'll be curious as to how long it stays lit. I have some solar predator deterrent flashers which flash all night, even after cloudy days, which surprised me.
